Not all homes need renovating. I'm considering painting, but I've been here nearly five years and it does need doing periodically. This way I have the ultimate say in the colours (with SomeOne's opinion weighing in the matter, of course).
I suppose the payoff comes decades down the road when I don't have to pay a mortgage anymore?
Also *now* because your rent can't be raised, or the building sold out from under you forcing you to move, and no one can tell you that you can't have your cats. I realize that you're very frustrated -- I've heard this before about renovation projects driving people mad. For my part there are things I'd probably just swallow the expense and pay someone to do for me. Yes, one has to interview contractors, etc. but with some references you can have the professionals in and out relatively quickly. Of course it costs -- but ultimately less than renting, particularly here where there isn't much choice and rents tend to be high.
