Was she perhaps delivered by caesarian? It's being crushed during the birth that makes babies look so red and mis-shapen. (I have cousins who adhered to the trend of sending out pictures taken of their newborns, and most were exceedingly unphotogenic to say the least, until some time had passed. After a few days they were normal babies, and often quite cute, but initially they were all purple and squashed looking. In contrast the ones who were born via caesarian looked like themselves from the start.)
